Shopify & ChatGPT Shopping

A feed or a "connected to ChatGPT" badge opens the door, but it doesn't get you chosen. What decides that is the data behind it: complete schema, identifiers, clean variants. And most Shopify themes ship only half of it. Here's the gap, and how to close it, same whether you're a solo store or a big brand.

"Connected" only opens the door. "Chosen" needs the data behind it. You can be plugged into ChatGPT and still lose the pick: the shop whose product data the assistant can fully read is the one it names.

The real gap

Your theme ships half the data

Most Shopify themes auto-generate the basics and stop. The fields AI leans on most, identifiers, complete schema, clean variants, are usually the ones left blank. Here's the difference between a page that gets skipped and one that gets chosen.

Same product, two data layers
Default themeskipped
  • title, price, description
  • basic Product markup
  • GTIN / MPN / SKU
  • Offer, availability, brand
  • variant attributes
  • FAQ & review schema
AI can't confidently match or reconcile you → left out.
Complete data layerchosen
  • title, price, description
  • full Product + Offer schema
  • GTIN / MPN / SKU + brand
  • availability, kept in sync
  • clean variant attributes
  • FAQ & review schema
Every buying attribute is extractable → confidently recommended.
Audit what your theme actually renders, not what you assume is there, the gap is almost always in the second half.

“Connected to ChatGPT” is the doorway. Complete, identifier-rich data is what gets you through it.

Close the gap

Four fixes that decide it

Do these and your feed goes from "connected" to "chosen." The first two are the biggest.

Complete your Product & Offer schema
Price, availability, brand, category, as data, not just on-page text. Check what actually renders, theme-deep.
Add identifiers, GTIN / MPN / SKU
Identifiers let AI reconcile your product with the same one mentioned elsewhere. Missing them makes you hard to trust.
Standardize variant attributes
Size, color, material, the exact things shoppers filter on ("wide," "waterproof"). Inconsistent variants fail intent-specific queries.
Unblock AI crawlers & tell Bing
Make sure crawlers aren't blocked in robots.txt, and submit your sitemap to Bing too, a lot of assistants lean on it.
